Autumn Term

During the autumn term, Year 4 pupils develop their understanding of place value by working with numbers beyond 1,000. They learn to compare and order numbers, round to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000, and use Roman numerals. Pupils then apply this knowledge to addition and subtraction, using formal written methods to add and subtract four-digit numbers and solve a range of reasoning and problem-solving questions. They are also introduced to the concept of area through counting squares and comparing the size of different shapes. Later in the term, children focus on multiplication and division, learning times tables up to 12 × 12, multiplying and dividing by 10 and 100, identifying factor pairs and developing efficient calculation strategies.

Spring Term

In the spring term, pupils continue to build on their multiplication and division skills, exploring more formal written methods, solving correspondence problems and working with remainders. They then study length and perimeter, measuring and comparing lengths in metres and kilometres and calculating the perimeter of rectilinear shapes. A significant focus is placed on fractions, where pupils investigate equivalent fractions, count beyond one whole, add and subtract fractions and find fractions of amounts. The term concludes with an introduction to decimals, including tenths and hundredths, partitioning decimal numbers and comparing and ordering decimals.

Summer Term

During the summer term, pupils deepen their understanding of decimals by exploring decimal equivalents, rounding decimals and positioning decimals on number lines. They then learn about money, converting between pounds and pence, solving real-life money problems and calculating totals and change. In their time unit, children read and compare analogue and digital clocks, convert between hours, minutes and seconds, and solve problems involving time. The final units cover shape, statistics, and position and direction. Pupils classify polygons, identify angles and lines of symmetry, interpret charts, graphs and timetables, and use coordinates and translation to describe movement on a grid.

End of Year Expectations

By the end of Year 4, pupils are expected to know all multiplication and division facts up to 12 × 12, confidently work with four-digit numbers, use formal written methods for the four operations, and apply their understanding of fractions, decimals, money, time, shape and statistics to solve problems and explain their reasoning.

 

 

 

The Year 4 English curriculum aims to develop pupils into confident, fluent readers, thoughtful writers and effective communicators. Through a wide range of high-quality fiction, non-fiction and poetry texts, children build their reading skills by increasing their vocabulary, improving their understanding of increasingly complex texts and developing their ability to infer, predict and explain. Pupils are encouraged to read widely and regularly, helping them to develop both a love of reading and a secure understanding of different authors, genres and themes.

In writing, children learn to plan, draft, edit and evaluate their work for a range of purposes and audiences. They write stories, reports, explanations, letters, persuasive texts and poetry, applying their growing knowledge of grammar and punctuation. Year 4 pupils are expected to use a wider range of sentence structures, including fronted adverbials, expanded noun phrases and paragraphs to organise ideas. Accurate use of punctuation, including apostrophes for possession and inverted commas for direct speech, is further developed.

Spelling continues to be an important focus, with pupils learning statutory Year 3 and 4 spelling patterns and common exception words. Handwriting should become increasingly fluent, legible and joined.

Speaking and listening skills are integrated across the curriculum, enabling pupils to participate in discussions, explain their thinking, listen respectfully to others and present ideas clearly. By the end of Year 4, pupils should be able to communicate confidently, read with understanding and write effectively for a variety of purposes.
